The Get Real Game is a career and life skills programme aimed at students aged 16 to 18.
The core activities take 13 to 20 hours of class time to complete. Optional activities provide opportunities to involve other teachers, parents, guardians and people from the local community.
Programme Synopsis
The Get Real Game is a career education life/work development program that enables students to rehearse for, experiment with and learn the pros and cons of various gateway options from secondary school to their own adult futures in simulations that are realistic, yet risk-free.
Students begin by investigating a range of work clusters and career gateways which takes them through a sequence of exploring education, life/work experiences and essential skills necessary for today’s world.

The objectives of The Get Real Game include enabling students to:
- build and maintain a positive self-image and interact with others;
- discover unique personal skills and talents to consider when choosing life/work roles;
- relate educational achievement and extracurricular interests to future life/work opportunities;
- effectively locate, interpret, evaluate and use career and labour market information, resources and services;
- engage in a range of teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making and communication scenarios;
- explore a range of career transition gateways that lead from secondary school to diverse work, learning and community roles;
- learn to view change as an opportunity for growth and learning, and respond positively to uncertainty and change;
- practice job search and work creation skills, as well as personal marketing, interviewing and time management;
- experiment with choices regarding school and other aspects of their lives and identify optional pathways to the kinds of futures they want; and
- begin development of personal action plans, outlining the goals they are setting for themselves for the first year following the successful completion of secondary school, as part of a lifelong career building/management process

The Get Real Game:
- has optional activities and discussion topics which are included for use at the discretion of educators;
- allows students to pass through unique, transitional gateway to a life that extends beyond the secondary educational experience;
- is easily linked to actual community resources and realities;
- realistically links students' life to work roles and personal career aspirations to all curriculum subjects;
- can be team taught by teachers and counsellors; and
- Includes specific learning outcomes for all sessions with performance indicators.
